Dayton, OH to Washington DC: From Dayton east the trail is a cyclist’s paradise of paved and gravel bike paths with rich history, including the Ohio to Erie, Montour, Great Allegheny Passage (GAP), and C&O Canal Towpath trails. ![]() The Great American will be hosted by 30 existing trails through the state. RTC’s route analysis defines the preferred route of the Great American Rail-Trail through Iowa as 468 miles and 54 completecomprising 255 existing trail miles and 212 gap miles. The Great American Rail-Trail is a developing 3,700-mile cross-country multiuse trail, which will one day be entirely bikeable and separated from vehicle traffic between Washington, D.C., and Washington State. The trail is also a host for the 1,300-mile September 11th National Memorial Trail and the 3,700-mile Great American Rail-Trail. The Great American Rail Trail is a proposed 3,700-mile route from Washington state to Washington D.C. Currently the route will generally run from Yellowstone Park, to Livingston, Bozeman, Three Forks, Butte, Anaconda, Ravalli County, Missoula and along the Route of the Olympian and connect with the Route of the Hiawatha in Idaho! Many other trails in Montana will serve as connectors with this route and be important parts of the system. In Cumberland, the trail meets the Great Allegheny Passage () to help form a continuous 334.5-mile route between Pittsburgh and D.C., an iconic trip that draws people from around the world. RTC worked with communities, organizations and public agencies in Montana to identify the most likely successful route through the state. The planned trail is already more than 53% complete with over 2,000 completed miles on the ground and will be within 50 miles of 50 million Americans.
